The Collapse Of Blizzard’s eSports Scene

In 2014, the story was revamped, erasing the established lore and replacing it with various mini-stories that weren’t necessarily connected and did not always have direct cohesion with the game itself. This change necessitated occasional retcons of lore and have made the game feel more disconnected from the underlying story. In addition, there are several mini-stories which focus on skins which aren’t ca

It’s unclear whether universal control over games that operate under the catch-all domain of esports will ever exist. Escalating conflict between streaming platforms that compete for viewer attention certainly isn’t helping the case for unified growth. It’s also worth questioning whether universal control is even needed. Larger titles seem to be doing just fine supporting their own leagues. A 16-year-old just took home $3 million at the first-ever _ Fortnite _ World Cup, after

DOTA2 ‘s hero pool is full of counters and somewhat well-balanced heroes. Each patch usually introduces pretty major changes to the game, but players are never tied to a certain meta. Because the game isn’t just decided on meta heroes but micro-level plays, items, builds and such, you can successfully run almost any composit

Before I talk Genesis gameplay , I feel like I have to share my MOBA experience. My street cred, if you will. I played a lot of LoL during its heyday, and made it a point to collect all of the Ahri and Rumble skins. When ranked was first introduced, I grouped up with four friends and tried to take on the world. We fought hard just to stay in Gold Rank. We once experimented with Dota 2 , which I enjoyed but also too complex to stick with. After the team dissolved, I played Smite briefly. With this in mind, I feel rather confident in saying that Genesis plays like an easier League of Legen

Finally, after years of mediocre performance and fierce competition from games like League of Legends , the Proleague was discontinued in 2016. Blizzard had very badly dropped its Golden Goose of a franchise that could have gone on to dominate the esports wo

Still, esports is often treated like one entity. In reality, individual games play out more like anthologies—unconnected by the umbrella term that defines them. Like a thin layer of algae on the surface of an abandoned pool, esports as a title masks the diverse ecosystem that exists beneath the surface, suffocating its variety and preventing outsiders from getting in the water. Even if you are a huge fan of one title, other games remain largely uninteresting and impossible to watch. As a result, can anyone really call themselves a fan of espo

Each change has caused a lot of frustration with players, sometimes resulting in key players permanently leaving the competitive scene. Qualifying is a long and arduous process, often involving the final days of a month spent playing for most of the day simply to retain a top spot – rewarding a grind more than actual skill. In addition, there is no official tournament client of the game. A disconnect between two opponents results in a match being replayed regardless of how far ahead one player was,, which has led to some controversial outcomes. There’s also the fact that in the past few years, Blizzard has leaned hard into design philosophy centered more around RNG and less around skill, driving some pro players away from the game entirely – as seen when Lifecoach left the competitive sc

Imagine an esports equivalent of ESPN. ESPN works because coverage of most traditional sports is basically the same. You point a camera at the field and watch what happens while two “experts” talk about what’s going on. Esports won’t and can’t work like this. Every game is drastically different from the next, with its own graphics, mechanics, and strategies to be emplo

It took years for any manner of reconciliation to occur. Even then, it was purely done for business reasons, resulting in all teams playing in the Proleague as the main space for competition. This merging into one space over-saturating the player market: since there were many more teams vying for the top spots and sponsorship, large numbers of popular players retired and many fans lost interest as their favorites left the sc

Since its birth, it has always been completely free to play, unlike League which involves unlocking Runes and farming to unlock new Champions. As long as you have a Steam account, you can play DOTA2 and will always be on an even playing field with other players, aside from sheer skill and cosmet

Still, I miss the accuracy of a mouse for skill shots. The characters don’t quite have the charm of Ahri, Rumble, or any of my other LoL mains. I find their voice acting annoying, and their 3D models don’t quite live up to their art. I don’t see myself dropping cash for skins. In the end, I think I just want to scratch the MOBA itch I’ve been ignoring for years. Genesis definitely does that, and will do so for any curious PS4 owners. It also doesn’t require PS Plus, which is a… plus. Give it a shot as your first MOBA items Guide, or first MOBA in years. If you have a PC, however, stick to the class
